As the stars of Matariki rise once again in the winter sky, we are called to pause, reflect, and realign. At Awataha Marae, this moment is marked through Te Pūao o Matariki 2026 — a gathering grounded in tikanga, community, and the shared journey forward.

He Karanga ki te Hapori — A Call to Gather

On Saturday 27 June 2026, our marae opens its doors before dawn, beginning with karakia at 6am, followed by a shared breakfast and a day of connection, expression, and celebration. From 10am to 2pm, the marae will come alive with performances, kōrero, and whānau engagement — a space where culture is not just observed, but lived.

Matariki — Time to Remember, Reset, and Rise

Matariki marks the Māori New Year, signalled by the rising of the Matariki star cluster. Traditionally, it is a time to:

  • Remember those who have passed

  • Celebrate the present

  • Prepare for the future

In 2026, the national theme “Matariki Herenga Waka” reminds us that Tāmaki is a gathering place for all people — a place where many journeys meet and move forward together.

That kaupapa aligns deeply with Awataha — a marae built on connection, resilience, and shared purpose.

Te Pūao — The First Light of Intention

Te Pūao o Matariki is about transition.

It is the moment where:

  • Darkness gives way to light

  • Reflection becomes intention

  • Intention becomes action

At Awataha, this is expressed through:

  • Karakia at dawn — grounding ourselves spiritually

  • Kai with whānau — strengthening connection

  • Performance and kōrero — activating culture in real time

This is how we carry Matariki forward — not as a single moment, but as a living practice.

A Festival With Purpose

Across Tāmaki Makaurau, Matariki is celebrated through a wide range of events, bringing communities together with kai, storytelling, and performance.

At Awataha, our focus remains clear:

  • Authentic cultural expression

  • Whānau-first engagement

  • Creating spaces where people belong

Te Pūao o Matariki is designed to feel real — grounded, accessible, and deeply connected to the people it serves.

Nau Mai, Haere Mai

This is an open invitation.

Come early.Stand in the cold of the morning.Feel the shift.

Bring your whānau. Bring your whakaaro. Bring your aspirations.

Because Matariki is not just about looking up at the stars —it’s about deciding who we are becoming beneath them.
